Memphis Grizzlies Star Ja Morant Makes Major In-Season Move
D. Ross Cameron-USA TODAY Sports

Ja Morant, sidelined Memphis Grizzlies’ sensation, shook up headlines on Wednesday with a significant decision.

Reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the basketball star is parting ways with agent Jim Tanner. Morant had been under Tanner’s representation since his entry into the NBA as the No. 2 pick in 2019.

Tanner, known for representing basketball legends like Tim Duncan and Ray Allen, continues to have Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane among his active clients.

Back in 2022, Morant inked a massive five-year rookie maximum extension worth $193 million, securing his stay in Memphis until the 2027-28 season. This contract stood as the largest ever awarded in the franchise’s history.

During that period, Morant had emerged as one of the brightest stars in the game, boasting an impressive average of 27.4 points per game in the 2021-22 season. He seemed poised to lead Memphis into contention, becoming one of the NBA’s prominent faces, until facing off-court controversies.

Morant faced two suspensions from the NBA for sharing videos on social media where he brandished a gun. Without him, Memphis struggled at the start of this season, recording a 6-19 record.

Upon his return from the 25-game suspension, Morant displayed stellar performances, averaging 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.6 rebounds in nine games. However, just as the 24-year-old appeared ready to move past recent setbacks, he was sidelined again due to injury.

In January, the star guard underwent season-ending surgery on his right shoulder. With playoff hopes dashed and a record of 25-50, the Memphis Grizzlies have faced challenges without Morant.

While Ja Morant’s new representation won’t immediately face contract negotiations, the focus now shifts to his rehabilitation both on and off the court for his return next season.
